Snus / Nicotine Pouches FAQs

What is snus?

Dating back to the 18th century, Snus is a moist, smokeless powder form of tobacco often classed as a dry variant of snuff. Swedish snus was previously widely available, but these days means of nicotine consumption have varied and people are now able to purchase nicotine pouches. Snus is illegal in the UK but is most commonly sold as a loose powder or as a small pre-packaged sachet containing ground tobacco, salt and food-grade smoke aroma flavourings. Common snus flavourings include citrus, bergamot, juniper, herb or floral - most Scandinavian snus originates from Sweden where it’s regulated as a consumable under the Swedish Food Act.

Are Nicotine Pouches safe?

Any form of nicotine ingestion is harmful in any form, and due to the lack of tobacco leaf the UK Food and Drug Administrations do not classify any oral nicotine pouch as a smokeless tobacco product. Nicotine is the only ‘threatening substance’ which although in itself is an incredibly addictive substance, is relatively harmless compared to other tobacco products. Tobacco products emit far more harmful toxins such as carbon monoxide, tar and other toxic chemicals that are released when smoked.

What do nicotine pouches do to your mouth?

When used in moderation, nicotine pouches are an effective nicotine-source replacement to other, more harmful tobacco products. Reports of holding the pouch close to the gingival tissue for elongated periods of time can cause injury and/or irritation, alongside other side effects such as nausea, hiccups, sore mouth and gum irritation alongside nicotine addiction and increased chance of relapse with tobacco Products.

Are Nicotine Pouches illegal?

Although there is an EU-wide ban on tobacco snus, nicotine pouches are exempt to current tobacco product regulations. Due to not containing tobacco, Nicotine Pouches are not currently regulated simultaneously with conventional and e-cigarettes. Standard general consumer product safety regulations apply, meaning that nicotine pouches cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 18. Although subject to review in the next revision of TPD compliance, individual countries currently have varying degrees of regulations on nicotine pouches.

What is the safest way to consume nicotine?

There is minimal threat from Nicotine itself, and the safest means of nicotine consumption are currently a nicotine patch, gum, nasal spray, lozenge or inhaler as these do not include any further harmful chemicals such as tar. Nicotine pouches and toothpicks have a more direct impact on the mouth and throat. The safest option for individuals struggling with nicotine addiction should use one or more FDA Approved NRT methods, which are even safe to use when smoking.
