About Sour Patch Kids
Sour Patch Kids were first sold in Canada in the 1970s under the name Mars Men before being relaunched in the USA in 1985 under the Sour Patch Kids name. They are now one of the best-selling non-chocolate confectionery brands in the United States and have become one of the most popular American candy imports in the UK. The sour-to-sweet transition is created by the tartaric acid and citric acid coating on the outside of each piece, which dissolves quickly on the tongue, giving way to the sweeter gummy base beneath.
The Extreme version was developed for buyers who find the Original too mild. The extra sour coating uses a higher concentration of acid for a more intense initial hit that takes longer to transition to sweet. Blue Raspberry is a distinctly American flavour profile with no direct British equivalent: a bright, electric berry flavour that bears no resemblance to real raspberries but has become iconic in its own right in the American candy market.

Sour Patch Kids: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Sour Patch Kids Original and Extreme?
The Original has a standard sour sugar coating that dissolves fairly quickly into the sweet gummy base. The Extreme has a significantly more intense sour coating that delivers a much sharper initial hit and takes longer to transition to sweet. The Extreme also has different flavours: strawberry, pear, orange and blue raspberry, versus the classic lime, lemon, orange and berry mix of the Original. If you have tried the Original and found it not sour enough, the Extreme is the next step. If you are new to Sour Patch Kids, start with the Original.
Are Sour Patch Kids available in UK supermarkets?
Sour Patch Kids are occasionally stocked in some UK supermarkets but the range is very limited and availability is inconsistent. The full range including the Extreme Theatre Box and Blue Raspberry flavour are not reliably available in UK supermarkets and are primarily sourced through specialist American candy importers. The versions stocked here are imported directly from North America.
What does Blue Raspberry taste like?
Blue Raspberry is an artificial flavour that does not replicate any real variety of raspberry. It has a bold, sweet and intensely tangy berry flavour with a bright, almost electric quality. The colour is vivid blue and the flavour is stronger and more punchy than standard raspberry. It is one of the most popular American candy flavours and has almost no equivalent in British confectionery, which is part of why it is so sought after as an American import.
